The new season is a great reason to make and keep resolutions. Whether it’s eating right or cleaning out the garage, here are some tips for making and keeping resolutions.

Make a list

Lists are great ways to stay on track. Write down some big things you want to accomplish and some smaller things, too.

Check the list regularly

Don’t forget to check in and see how you’re doing. Just because you don’t achieve the big goals right away doesn’t mean you’re not making progress.

Reward yourself

When you succeed in achieving a goal, be it a big one or a small one, make sure to pat yourself on the back.

Think positively

Positive thinking is a major factor in success. So instead of mulling over things that didn’t go quite right, remind yourself of things that did.

Keep in touch with site visitors and boost loyalty

There are so many good reasons to communicate with site visitors. Tell them about sales and new products or update them with tips and information.

Here are some reasons to make blogging part of your regular routine.

Blogging is an easy way to engage with site visitors

Writing a blog post is easy once you get the hang of it. Posts don’t need to be long or complicated. Just write about what you know, and do your best to write well.

Show customers your personality

When you write a blog post, you can really let your personality shine through. This can be a great tool for showing your distinct personality.

Blogging is a terrific form of communication

Blogs are a great communication tool. They tend to be longer than social media posts, which gives you plenty of space for sharing insights, handy tips and more.

It’s a great way to support and boost SEO

Search engines like sites that regularly post fresh content, and a blog is a great way of doing this. With relevant metadata for every post so search engines can find your content.

Drive traffic to your site

Every time you add a new post, people who have subscribed to it will have a reason to come back to your site. If the post is a good read, they’ll share it with others, bringing even more traffic!

Blogging is free

Maintaining a blog on your site is absolutely free. You can hire bloggers if you like or assign regularly blogging tasks to everyone in your company.

A natural way to build your brand

A blog is a wonderful way to build your brand’s distinct voice. Write about issues that are related to your industry and your customers.

Tips for writing great posts that increase your site traffic

Write about something you know. If you don’t know much about a specific topic that will interest your readers, invite an expert to write about it.

Speak to your audience

You know your audience better than anyone else, so keep them in mind as you write your blog posts. Write about things they care about. If you have a company Facebook page, look here to find topics to write about

Take a few moments to plan your post

Once you have a great idea for a post, write the first draft. Some people like to start with the title and then work on the paragraphs. Other people like to start with subtitles and go from there. Choose the method that works for you.

Don’t forget to add images

Be sure to include a few high-quality images in your blog. Images break up the text and make it more readable. They can also convey emotions or ideas that are hard to put into words.

Edit carefully before posting

Once you’re happy with the text, put it aside for a day or two, and then re-read it. You’ll probably find a few things you want to add, and a couple more that you want to remove. Have a friend or colleague look it over to make sure there are no mistakes. When your post is error-free, set it up in your blog and publish.

HB 1530 – Cap and Trade Bill

The Oregon Legislative Session is into its second week and HB 1530 – the Cap & Trade Bill – is expected to pass the Senate Environment & Natural Resources Committee this week and be sent to the Ways & Means Committee.

While this is very short notice, I have asked that a discussion item be added to the Chamber Meeting Agenda for tomorrow, February 11 ^th .

While the North Plains Chamber does not take a position on candidates, should the Chamber consider a position on the Cap & Trade Bill?

Fundraiser for Ski & Ride for a Cure

Fundraiser for Ski & Ride for a Cure

February 22 ^nd , 10 am- 4 pm

10880 NW Main Street

North Plains, Oregon

We will have local venders that are donating proceeds to this cause. We will be holding a car wash for donations, collecting cans and bottles, as well as a $10 BBQ buffet. Our team, Slop-A-Dope, will be there answering questions and walking you through the donation process. The Ski and Ride for a Cure mascot, Ryder the tiger will also be joining us. Please post the attached flyer for your customers and employees.

We will be setting up a memorial for any and everyone to come and add their loved ones to. This memorial will be on the front window of Springer Body & Paint for the entire month of February. We would love to share the memories of your loved ones. Also, there will be a locked donation box outside for those that would like to donate after office hours. (Please make checks payable to Ski & Ride for a Cure).

Thank you so much for taking the time to hear about this amazing cause that we are extremely passionate about. We’ve put together a team of skiers/boarders to compete at the Mt. Hood Skibowl vertical challenge. Our team is very passionate about our community and fighting the good fight against cancer and serious childhood diseases.

The vertical challenge is a 24-hour ski/snowboarding event hosted by Ski & Ride for a Cure and is the first weekend in March. Each year attend this event, we work hard to reach our annual event goal of 60k. Unfortunately, this year might be the last event due to lack of sponsors, donations and participants.

This is a great fear of ours for many reasons. One significant reason is the cause itself. Ski and Ride for a Cure raises funds to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Children’s Cancer Association located in Portland. The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures and means of prevention for pediatric catastrophic disease through research and treatment. At the Children’s Cancer Association, they believe all kids deserve long, wonderful lives. Or at the very least, short, wonderful lives. That’s why their

programs leverage music, nature, friendship, and resources to create transformative moments of joy for

families facing cancer and other serious illnesses.

The other reason is the experience. We are all working community members of North Plains and surrounding areas. Each year, we count down the days to the event because we want to raise donations and ride in hopes to make a difference.

The event itself is a magical experience…

As soon as you arrive, you are touched by so many people that have joined forces to raise money for an amazing cause. Each face has a story and tears will most definitely be shed. This event brings peace, courage, and unity unlike any other event us and many others have seen. The only true way to understand the beauty of this event is to experience it and hear each individuals reason “why”.

I would like to share two of our team members reasons with you now;

Devin Jenkins have been involved with Ski & Ride for a Cure since 2009. Here is his story:

Devin Jenkin’s close friend Andrea’s daughter, Kelsey Ranea was diagnosed with cancer at the young age of two. During the next couple years, Devin helped with Kelsey’s care. There were countless trips to the emergency room and numerous long nights spent comforting Kelsey as she endured the pain caused by cancer. On December 12th, 2009, Kelsey gained her angel wings and now plays with other children in heaven without pain or suffering.

Shortly after Kelsey’s passing, Devin came across a Ski & Ride for a Cure event at Mt. Hood Skibowl on social media and has been involved ever since. Giving back, helping those fighting cancers and his love for snowboarding motivated Devin to participate. His first year, Devin raised over 2000.00 dollars and rode for 19.5 hours straight.

We asked Devin why he supports our organization. He replied, “HOTS (formally named “Hope on the Slopes”) has been an amazing experience for me. The staff, participants, volunteers, and shared stories is what makes HOTS an awesome program. I look forward too many more years supporting HOTS and such a great cause”. Devin will be joining us at Mt. Hood Skibowl this year.

Crystal Jenkins has been involved with this event since 2018. This is her story:

There is a peace that comes from an event like this. Seeing so many people work hard to keep a dream alive. The dream to one day forget the pain left by cancer. This time of year means so much to me. I find new hope every time my husband and I are at the Ski and ride for a Cure event. New hope for a better tomorrow.

March 26, 2016. I held my grandfather…my biggest fan… my person… as he took his last breath. Those last moments with him will never be forgotten. Watching him as he transitioned into peace and no longer had to fight the cancer that filled his body with so much pain. I love you so much grandpa…. I miss you…I do this for you grandpa….

Cancer is the most heartbreaking experience to watch a loved one suffer from. It’s one of those silent fears. You hope and pray it never touches your life. Unfortunately, it’s a sad fact that your life will be impacted by it in one way or another. This is why we do it. We can’t all be superhero’s, but together we can give new hope and make a difference. Today I shed tears because I miss you grandpa…tomorrow I shed tears of joy and hope for a better tomorrow.

We do it for hope.

We do it for love.

We do it for our loved ones now watching over us.

This is more than a fundraiser to us. Each day we walk with the pains and scars left behind from disease and cancer. Each day we fight to try to keep another innocent child from the pain and the mental anguish this disease causes. We just want to save a life or two in the only way we know how.

Australian Animal Rescue Project

Australian Animal Rescue Project ~ Information shared from Dale Wilhelm & Debbie Brodie

Dale Wilhelm, our library volunteer and a Library Craft Guild member is asking us to join a world-wide effort being put forth by those who knit, crochet, and sew to create pouches and snuggly housing for the displaced and orphaned animals in Australia that have been affected by the wildfires there .

D ale is preparing a binder of simple patterns for various items made by various means that will be available within the next few days at the North Plains Public Library for you to photocopy. Simply ask the staff for the binder.

We hope many of you will be interested in joining this effort. Dale will be our contact for gathering finished items and getting them to our Pacific Northwest regional hub. She can be contacted at dalewilhelm@att.net .

Washington County Museum is now Five Oaks Museum

Introducing the oldest new museum in the Pacific Northwest: Five Oaks Museum

Most recently known as the Washington County Museum, this vibrant history, art, and culture museum has taken many forms over its 64 year history. From its origins as a small affiliate group of early Euro-American settler descendents, it grew to take shape as the Washington County Historical Society in 1956. The organization was absorbed into Washington County services in 1975. By 1986 it had moved to its location on the Portland Community College Rock Creek campus and grown into the independent non-profit museum it is today. Now the museum greets the new decade with a new name, a new website, and a fresh outlook.

“This change is part of our work to keep pace with the dynamic communities we serve,” say Co-Directors Molly Alloy and Nathanael Andreini. “The identity of Washington County has long been that of innovation, perseverance, and cultural exchange. To protect that legacy is not to stand still, but to find brave pathways forward that demonstrate the museum’s continued dedication to those histories as past, present, and future.”

The communities around the Museum are growing and the cultural landscape is more complex than ever. The Museum needed a name that reflects the complexity of the community onto the national and international stage as well as in the digital realm, yet kept a strong connection to place. The historic Five Oaks site has been a place of gathering, exchange and preservation in this valley for centuries. The site of five prominent oak trees has been a culturally significant gathering place for over 500 years. First maintained in traditional ways by the Kalapuyan peoples, who would return annually in their seasonal round, the site has survived the subsequent eras of trading, settlement, agriculture, industry and suburbanization. It is a place that embodies the kind of layered histories with multicultural relevance that the museum is interested in featuring.

“In becoming Five Oaks Museum in 2020,” say Andreini and Alloy, “we embrace those deep roots as we do our part to move history forward.”

A new look for the museum accompanies the name change. In the new logo, the five is modern and graphic, expressing relevance in cutting edge cultural production. But the colors are grounded and complex, alluding to fertile soil and the camas flower. The three shapes indicate the aspects of the oak tree that they strive to emulate – the resilient, sturdy trunk; the welcoming shelter of the canopy; and the invisible life-giving root system that holds it all up.

The North Plains Food Pantry provides food and other essential items to families in the North Plains area. The City of North Plains provides the location for the Pantry at no additional cost. The Oregon Food Bank provides some of the food and the North Plains Senior Center is the collection point.

One of your neighbors in North Plains volunteers time to coordinate with the Oregon Food Bank and to open the Pantry on a regular basis.

The Pantry receives donations from the Oregon Food Bank but not always the items really needed or an over-abundance of one item at one time. They use a cash fund to buy the items really needed in our area.

North Plains Elementary School Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) sponsors and coordinates a
holiday gift shop for students. The PTO reaches out for donations from family, friends and
businesses in our community.

Each Student has the opportunity to choose a gift for two special adults
in their lives at NO COST! They will then wrap and prepare the gifts for giving.

DONATIONS & SUPPLIES ARE NEEDED FOR THIS EVENT!

We are looking for small gifts for adults priced between $1-$5. Some suggestions are jewelry, gloves, blankets, sporting accessories,
candy, knick-knacks and tools. Other items we need are gift bags, tissue paper, bows, small boxes and
self-adhesive tags.

Drop off new, unwrapped items by December 11th inside the front door at the

Washington County Museum’s Free Family Morning series continues with hands-on workshops led by local artists. This September, illustrator Anke Gladnick will lead you through the process of drawing your own family history. Gladnick created the beautiful mural in the Museum’s past exhibit, AgriCulture . The artist returns to the museum this fall after their spring Free Family Morning workshop had to be rescheduled. You will imagine your family’s symbols, share your stories with your kids, and draw a family history together! Materials are provided for this drop-in, all-ages workshop.

Free Family Mornings is an ongoing series hosted by the Washington County Museum. Each month from March through November the museum hosts a family-friendly, no-experience-needed workshop led by a teaching artist from the community. Workshops are drop-in with no registration required. Museum entrance is free during these events, and includes access to all rotating and permanent exhibits.

Washington County Museum invites you to a Local Story event with David G. Lewis, PhD. Lewis is an esteemed author, Native American historian, ethnohistory consultant, anthropologist, teacher, and a member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde.

Lewis and Stephanie Littlebird Fogel, guest curator of the museum’s latest exhibit This IS Kalapuyan Land , will discuss Indigenous representation in museums and the Oregon history that is often left out: the creation of reservations, the residential school system, termination, and restoration of Indigenous sovereignty. This traumatic period from the 1850s-1970s was neglected on our museum’s own original panels before Fogel addressed them. Lewis will share his research on the impact of these policies then and now and how people and institutions can address truth and healing today.

The museum’s Local Story series shares the stories of people who contribute to the living history of this region. Each presenter selects a venue which brings another layer of meaning to their message; Lewis’ Local Story will take place at the museum in conjunction with the current exhibit, This IS Kalapuyan Land, which he contributed to . The new exhibit re-tools the museum’s cornerstone historical display, called This Kalapuya Land, which was created over a decade ago. As viewers move through the space, they will encounter hand-written edits and annotations made by Littlebird Fogel to highlight errors, update language, and note important passages in the original content. The exhibit questions what information is presented as “fact” and how the museum context shapes what the audience learns. “Ultimately, I want to challenge the way we recall our shared histories,” states Littlebird Fogel, “and examine how biased narratives can be perpetuated through archeology and academic institutions like museums and universities.” Fogel also brought in contemporary artworks by 17 Native artists in order to tell the stories of Indigenous descendants who are contributing to cultural survivance today.

This special conversation will be a chance to learn more about essential local history and culture on an intimate scale with some open discussion time at the end. Refreshments will be available.

Local Story is a nomadic public program created by Washington County Museum to raise awareness about the diversity of people who contribute to the living history of this remarkable region. The program comprises a series of individual events organized in direct collaboration with community members, all of which revolve around the theme of locality, personal history, and the pursuit of opportunity in Washington County and its environs. Presentation locations are chosen by each presenter and serve as an immersive backdrop in the telling of their story.

A Call to Action for Volunteers-Jessie Mays Needs a Fresh Coat of Paint!

Announcement from Will Worthey, North Plains Library Director:

Dear friends and community members,

I am putting out the call to find many, many volunteers to assist with a community effort that will make a real difference in the cultural life of our town. Recently the Library installed a new sound and projection system in the Jessie Mays Community Hall, and just before this, our hard working public works department had the siding and the doors upgraded.

Now we want to finish the job and we want your help

We want to get a fresh coat of paint on the walls of our much loved community hall. Honorable Mayor Lenahan and some other selectors have chosen an excellent color scheme. The Library department will find the funds for the paint and we need many citizens with just a little painting experience to get the hall looking its best.

Please email me at willw@wccls.org , if you are available on some Fridays or Saturdays to help paint. My goal is to have the task completed in just two sessions and for that I need many volunteers.

This apple pie – especially if it is made in Oregon – is a prime example of why the gross receipts tax (GRT) model being considered by the Legislature is a bad idea – and costly for consumers.

By the time this pie gets to a dessert plate, the pyramiding impact of the GRT could have taxed it six times or more, according to a Washington State study. In fact, food is hit more than any other product by a GRT, and we know much of that cost gets passed through to consumers in higher prices.

Disaster Resilience for Small Businesses and Organizations is an awareness-level, four-hour course provides participants with a general understanding of the risks associated with natural hazards and disasters, introduce methods of assessing that risk to vulnerable small businesses, and describe the business continuity planning process to help small businesses prepare for, plan for, mitigate, respond to, and recover from any natural hazard or disaster that may occur. Modules will include instruction on:

Key concepts and topics will be reinforced with facilitator-led group discussions that utilize realistic and practical planning methods. These discussions will illustrate the diverse challenges and complexities of disaster resilience for small businesses while building participants’ experience and confidence in anticipating, preparing for, and recovering from a natural disaster.

The Washington County Museum launches another series of Free Family Mornings for 2019 starting on February 9th with a collage card workshop lead by artist Dey Rivers. This workshop, like all of the Free Family Morning events, is a chance for families and folks of all ages to experience the museum as well as roll up their sleeves for some hands-on learning. Rivers presents a celebration of craft, fine art, and the coming together of different elements. She describes teaching art “as a way to actively bring a dialogue into the community on personal and social issues both past and present while expressing the value of our differences.” Visitors will create their own collage art greeting cards for Black History Month, Valentine’s Day, and other celebrations. The workshop provides instruction on the process of collage while exploring the history of this fascinating art form.

Dey Rivers is a multimedia artist who lives and works in Portland, OR having recently returned from the East coast where she completed her degree in Fine Art. Rivers’ work encompasses elements of design, portraiture, and storytelling through her personal mantra of the Ghanaian Twi word Sankofa, meaning: “go back and get it”. Her art explores the duality and truth of lived experiences and observations that one must look to the past in order to inform the present and shape the future. Advocacy in Action

SUPPORT EMPLOYER’S RIGHT TO DRUG FREE WORKPLACE! – OPPOSE SB 379

Dear Administration,

Maintaining safe workplaces is a primary concern for OSCC members. SB 379 would prevent an employer from enforcing a drug-free workplace policy for individuals testing positive for marijuana.

If the Legislature enacts SB 379, Oregon employers of all sizes would be in an impossible situation. Oregon law and federal law would be in conflict.

In addition, it would be almost impossible for Oregon businesses to reconcile SB 379 with their obligations to maintain safe workplaces that do not endanger other employees, the public or the customers they serve.

Here’s why OSCC opposes SB 379

SB 379 is in direct conflict to the Oregon Supreme Court’s decision in the Emerald Steel case, which held that Oregon employers are entitled to enact ‘zero tolerance policies’ on marijuana use.

In 2010, The Oregon Supreme Court ruled in the case of Emerald Steel Fabricators, Inc., v. Bureau of Labor and Industries, and found that the use of medical marijuana, though authorized by state law, was an “illegal use of drugs” under federal law, which preempts state law in these circumstances.

The Court held that employers can lawfully take adverse employment actions against employees based on their use of federally-illegal drugs. It upheld an employer’s right to implement ‘zero tolerance’ drugfree workplace policies.

In 2014, employer rights were again upheld by Oregon voters who voted in support of Measure 91, which specifically precluded “amend[ing] or affect[ing] in any way any state or federal law pertaining to employment matters” (Section 4. Article 1).

SB 379 is preempted by the Drug-Free Workplace Act.

Maintaining a drug-free workplace ensures the safety and well-being of employees, the public, and the customers they serve. Furthermore, employers with federal contracts are required to maintain drug-free workplaces as a matter of federal law.

The Drug-Free Workplace Act requires employers who receive grants or contracts from the federal government (construction companies, hospitals and long-term care facilities, among others) to ensure that their workplaces are drug-free. Drug testing will not reveal whether an employee with marijuana in his or her system used it during working hours or during “non-working hours” (a term in SB 379 that might be interpreted to include meal breaks), much less whether the marijuana was used on the employer’s premises or not. This would make it impossible for an employer to comply with the federal requirements.

There are no recognized tests for impairment due to marijuana use.

The exception in SB 379 for off-duty marijuana use that impairs employees’ performance on the job cannot be implemented, because currently, there is no recognized test for whether an employee is “impaired” by the use of marijuana (off duty or not). Current testing protocols can do no more than confirm whether an employee has marijuana in their system, not whether it results in impairment or being “under the influence.”

Without a drug test that measures impairment, an employer’s efforts to maintain a safe work environment are compromised.

An employee’s use of legal prescription drugs is already protected.

Both the Americans With Disabilities Act (“ADA”) and Oregon disability law require an employer to reasonably accommodate an employee’s disability and the treatment of a disability with medication, including situations in which off-duty use of medication affects the employee’s performance at work. A well-developed body of federal and state case law tells an employer whether an accommodation is or is not “reasonable.” SB 379, on the other hand, imposes no such limitation: an employer may not limit employees’ off-duty use of any lawful substances except to the extent it causes an impairment at work or relates to a bona fide occupational qualification.

Making Sushi with Chef Maki: A Presentation and Sampling

The latest presentation in the North Plains Public Library’s Culinary Literacy Series is entitled Japanese Culinary Literacy, Making Sushi with Chef Maki.

Not only will Sushi Chef Maki demonstrate how to make a sushi roll but will teach how to create beautiful artistic sushi, as well. Attendees will be treated to sampling of the sushi as well as a delicious Tofu Miso Soup made by library volunteer, Emi Graham. Needed: Holiday Gift Shop Donations @NPES!

Every year the North Plains Elementary School Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) gathers donations for the children’s Holiday Gift Shop. Each student has an opportunity to visit the Gift Shop and select an item for two special adults in their life.

This year they have 391 students, so they need to obtain 782 new gifts. Following is full information.

The donation deadline is this WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 5TH . With the increase of students this year, the PTO really needs your help.

This month at Washington County Museum’s Free Family Morning event, workshop participants will produce their very own sculptures in air-dry clay. The two-person artist team, Anna Gray & Ryan Wilson Paulsen, have made imagined museum-style labels based on the stories featured in our AgriCulture exhibit to serve as inspiration for the sculptures. The artists will help participants of all skill levels to learn the basic hand-building and painting methods needed to make a colorful sculpture.

Anna and Ryan created this unique family activity specifically to compliment the AgriCulture exhibit, saying they “let what we hear and read in the exhibit determine the details and logistics of how the project comes together.” The workshop they have created will let visitors of all ages show their own impressions and personal connections to the history of agriculture in the Tualatin Valley while also learning new creative skills. Come create new meaning for historic museum artifacts through this playful, hands-on workshop!

Anna Gray + Ryan Wilson Paulsen are two people who work together as one artistic entity. They’re project-based work is often grounded in and around the activities of reading, writing, and translation. They make objects, images, books, and ephemera, using art as an extended form of study and a testing ground for ideas about language, politics, and social life.

Utilizing a range of media and contexts, their pieces and projects have appeared in many public places as well as at institutions such as The Renaissance Society (Chicago, IL); The San Diego Museum of Art (San Diego, CA); SPACES (Cleveland, OH); Locust Projects (Miami, FL); Camp CARPA (Joshua Tree, CA); Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (Portland, OR); and on the pages of NOON Literary Annual. The pair live in Portland, Oregon, where they work, teach, and raise their 8-year-old son, (a sometimes chipmunk by the name of Nutmeg Elements Bridger).

Free Family Mornings is an ongoing series hosted by the Washington County Museum. Each month during the school year the museum hosts a family-friendly, no-experience-needed workshop led by a teaching artist from the community. Museum entrance is always FREE during these events, and includes access to all rotating and permanent exhibits.

Make fun one-of-a-kind prints on paper through the monotype printmaking process.

13th Annual North Plains Jingle

See the holiday lights and be part of the parade!

This will be the 13th year for the Jingle. Individuals, families, friends and organizations are encouraged to decorate anything that moves and participate in the parade.

Some folks decorate trucks and trailers, others bring the family car, and many residents rent golf carts from J & S Golf Carts on Main Street at (503) 647-1984. Motorcycles and bicycles can join. It’s up to you as long as you can keep pace with the parade which moves about 10 miles an hour and have a light or two you can join.

Don’t forget – awards are given for the best decorated vehicle!

The Jingle begins and ends at Jessie Mays Community Park and the procession last about 20-30 minutes. Hot chocolate, cider, and cookies are served afterwards courtesy of the sponsor Loch Lolly Christmas Tree Forest and North Plains Events Association.

If you would like your home to be included in the judging for this year’s event, please register at www.npfun.org .

Lights must be installed by the Sunday prior to the event to be included in the contest. Awards are given in various categories including:

“Museum After Dark” promises an evening of ghost hunting and paranormal finds

This year, the Washington County Museum’s beloved annual Halloween-inspired program, “Museum After Dark” features the theme, “If These Walls Could Talk.”

Join us for ghost hunting, workshops, and tasty drinks as we learn what paranormal investigators have found at the Museum’s Old Log Jail during a recent investigation. At least two men were known to have died within the jail’s walls between 1853 and 1870… And now, for the first time in Museum history, they have a chance to come back and tell their stories!

Museum curator Liza Schade promises, “The Museum will feature a display of macabre artifacts from deep inside our darkened vaults. We will show evidence from two different murder cases, plus our infamous wicker body casket, and other items that will make you cringe!”

When: Thursday, October 26 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Where: Washington County Museum on the Portland Community College Rock Creek Campus, 17677 NW Springville Road, Portland

Why: Because it’s fun to be scared!

Cost: $10 for Members, $15 in Advance, $17 at the door. Tickets include the presentation, one adult beverage, and a free raffle ticket to accompany paranormal investigators to the Plum Hill Vineyard in November. This event is for adults only (21+)

There are many issues to talk about. For example, where is the debate on health care leading us? How can we make things a little easier for those working hard just to make ends meet? And, because I got my start in community college, I am also focused on increasing affordable options for education to help people gain the knowledge and skills they need to secure good jobs now and in the future.

Oregon’s military heritage goes back thousands of years with native warrior traditions. From 1847 to 1880 Army and volunteers units engaged Oregon’s native peoples in eight major conflicts. The Army built several forts from Oregon’s coast to the Snake River. The Oregon Militia was first created in 1843 and this led to creation of the Oregon National Guard in 1887. As the Pacific Northwest’s well-trained National Guard unit, the 41st Infantry Division served commendably from 1941 to 1945. Oregonians served heroically in Korea and Vietnam. Recently Oregon Army and Air National Guard units have been serving in Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts.

This is a beautiful bicycle tour from Papa’s Pizza Parlor located at 15700 Blueridge Drive in Beaverton, Oregon (near Terpenning Recreation Complex) to Stub Stewart State Park in Buxton, with an option to explore Vernonia and return. This scenic, fundraising ride has a moderately challenging 100 and 64-mile bike tour that explores beautiful farmlands as you wind through the country roads of North Plains and work your way toward the paved Banks-Vernonia State Trail in Banks, which is rider-friendly to both road and mountain bikes. A 35-mile option is also available that includes two rest stops, where you will receive snacks and refreshments provided by NW Bicycle Safety Council Sponsors and served by community volunteers in North Plains.

The stage is set for a conflict in which countryman battle countryman and brother fights brother.

It’s time to register for 2017 Fall Recreational Soccer!
This is a recreational league open to all U6-U14 players regardless of experience. Practices will begin mid-August and league games will be played on Saturdays starting after Labor Day. The U6 and U8 teams will play games in Forest Grove area against other FC West teams. The U6 teams will include boys and girls. The price for registering on a U6/U8 team is $80 and includes a uniform. U9-U14 teams will be playing in the Tualatin Youth Soccer League and will be traveling for half of their games. Salmonberry Trail Project

The Salmonberry Trail Intergovernmental Agency (STIA) and Tillamook Forest Heritage Trust (TFHT) invite you to participate in a workshop to gather local input for development of a strategic marketing plan for the Salmonberry Trail project. This plan will refine the identity of the trail, identify the full range of potential trail users, markets and strategies to reach them, and establish unified messaging for the trail. It will serve as the foundation for future marketing and promotion of the trail by a variety of local and regional organizations.

The communities along this 86-mile long trail are unique, and we need your input and local knowledge to assure the trail marketing strategy is something that will work for you and meet local needs. We would also like to learn from you what has worked best in terms of marketing your community or region in the past, and what additional opportunities may exist that can be realized through the Salmonberry Trail project.

We will be holding three workshops in Tillamook and Washington Counties the week of April 10, and hope that you are able to join us at one. Here are the details on when and where you can participate:

The workshops will be facilitated by staff from HUEN LLC of Portland, who are working on behalf of STIA and TFHT to develop the strategic marketing plan. This work is being supported by a matching grant from Travel Oregon.

In addition to getting your input for the strategic marketing plan, we will also share information at each workshop on key work that has been taking place on the project, and what will be happening next.

Washington County Museum New Exhibit: Timber in the Tualatin Valley

We are proud to announce that “Timber in the Tualatin Valley” is our new permanent exhibit, sponsored by Stimson Lumber Company! With many original artifacts on loan from local collector Bill Racine, this display aims to teach visitors about the history of logging in Washington County, from the first pioneers to railroading to gas-powered engines.

Much of the local ancestry here tracks back to the loggers of the old days, who carved out this area for homesteads and town sites beginning in the 1860s. Learn about the dangers of the job and what camp life was like for loggers through the tools they used in the woods! Feel what it is like to lay on a straw mattress in the bunkhouse, take a funny photo in our head-in-a-hole logger cutout, and learn about the area on our touch screen mapping program. Check out our calendar for upcoming talks about the industry as well! This will be the 12th year for the Jingle. Individuals, families, friends and organizations are encouraged to decorate anything that moves and participate in the parade.

Don’t forget – awards are given for the best decorated vehicle!

The Jingle begins and ends at Jessie Mays Community Park and the procession last about 20-30 minutes. Hot chocolate, cider, and cookies are served afterwards courtesy of the sponsor Lochlolly Christmas Tree Forest and North Plains Events Association .

City Council Review of the Recommended Approval from the Planning Commission

The City of North Plains received two applications for annexation earlier this year. The Planning Commission conducted a public hearing at the May 11, 2016, Planning Commission Meeting. They have made recommendation for approval of both applications. On November 7 ^th , the City Council will review the application and consider the recommendation from the Planning Commission. The Council begins at 7:00 pm. The public is welcome to attend.
